Is Your Home Ready for Oregon’s Winter Rain? A Roof, Gutter, Siding and Window Checklist

Rainy days are part of life in Aumsville and the surrounding Willamette Valley. Your roof, gutters, siding, and windows all help keep that rain outside. Taking a few minutes to look over these areas can help you spot a concern before it has more time to develop.

Look for changes in your roof

You do not need to climb onto your roof to notice potential problems. From the ground, look for shingles that appear missing, lifted, or out of place. Inside, check ceilings and attic spaces you can safely access for new water stains, damp spots, or signs of a leak.
If you notice a change after a storm, have a roofing professional take a closer look. The source of a leak is not always directly above the spot where water appears indoors.

Watch your gutters during a rainy day

A rainy day is a good time to see whether your gutters are carrying water as expected. Look for water spilling over the sides, dripping from a seam, or pooling near your home. Leaves and other debris can block gutters and downspouts, while loose sections may need repair.
Check from a safe location on the ground. If you cannot tell where the water is going, a professional can help assess the gutters and downspouts.

Check siding for gaps or damage

Siding helps shield the walls beneath it from the weather. Walk around your home and look for loose panels, cracks, gaps around trim, or areas that appear warped or damaged. Pay particular attention to spots where siding meets windows, doors, and other exterior features.
A change in appearance does not always mean water has entered the wall, but it is worth checking before more winter rain arrives.

Notice drafts and moisture around windows

Windows should close securely and keep rain from entering your home. Look for damaged trim, gaps around the frame, or water staining near the sill. If you feel a draft, check whether the window closes and latches properly.
Condensation on the room side of the glass can have several causes, including indoor humidity. Water appearing around the frame during rain may point to a different issue and deserves a closer look.

Make a note of what you find

You do not need to solve every issue at once. Take photos of anything that concerns you, note when you first noticed it, and watch for changes after the next rainfall. Those details can help when you speak with a contractor.
